It is a messy, frustrating and challenging struggle to deal with. The team at Your Local Melbourne Plumber understands this, and so below, we have listed five ways that you can clear your drains at home on your own. These methods work great on minor blockages in all types of drains, so pull those sleeves up, and let’s get unblocking!
Method 1: Plunging
Plunging is one of plumbing’s most traditional tools, and it has stood the test of time. With plumbers and homeowners still using the plunger to unblock minor blockages in drains.
What You Need: Plunger (Plungers differ in shape depending on the type of drain that is blocked. E.g. Sinks, Toilets etc.)
How To Unblock Your Drain Using a Plunger: Place the plunger over the blocked drain and start suctioning. Make sure you have covered the entire drain opening for best results. Make sure that you plunge straight and vertical, having the plunger on an angle won’t allow you to get the force you need, and the seal can come loose. If air is in the plunger, press the plunger down slowly to create suction and reduce air in the cup, this will help make a better seal. Make sure the plunger is submerged If there is not enough water to submerge the plunger, add water from a cup or bucket.
Method 2: Coat Hanger
The coat hanger method is an excellent alternative if you don’t have a plunger at home.
What You Need: A wire coat hanger
How to Unblock Your Drains Using a Coat Hanger: Grab a wire coat hanger and some pliers, use the pliers to unwind the coat hanger, then mould the wire into a straight line with a hook shape at one end. Now you have a wire hook ready to go you can begin fishing down your drain for any objects or blockages.
Method 3: Hot Water
Minor drain blockages are commonly caused by things like toilet paper, soap or grease. Using hot water on these types of obstructions can help break down the objects and get your drains flowing again.
What You Need: Hot Water from your kettle
How to Unblock Your Drains Using Hot Water: Simply boil water in your kettle, slowly pour a small amount of the hot water from your kettle down your drain and wait to see if anything starts moving. For severe blockages which have built up over time, this method may not work entirely, though it may clear things up enough for you until a blocked drain specialist can assist you with your drains.
If You have PVC pipes, it is best to avoid this method as the heat from the water can cause the joints to loosen. If using this method in a toilet and you have a porcelain bowl, make sure to pour the hot water directly into the water and not onto the bowl as it can crack from the heat.
Method 4: Baking Soda and Vinegar
Baking soda and vinegar is a more gentle alternative to using harsh chemical drain cleaners which are sold in supermarkets. Using the baking soda and vinegar mixture is a much safer option than using a chemical drain cleaner as these chemicals are incredibly harmful to the environment and your drains.
What You Need: ⅓ Cup of Baking Soda
⅓ Cup of White Vinegar
How to Unblock Your Drains Using Baking Soda and Vinegar: Mix up 1/3 cup of baking soda with 1/3 cup of vinegar and pour down the affected drain. After the mixture has fizzled out, wash some water down the drain. If you are using this method on a blocked toilet drain, the water level in the toilet must be reasonably low to give this mixture a chance, if the water level in the toilet is up to 75% full, try emptying some water with a bucket.
